Are you an Auslan interpreter with experience of interpreting in an adult English classroom?

Auslan interpreters are well aware of the challenges of working between English and Auslan in educational settings, however few interpreters are as familiar with interpreting in an English classroom, such as the courses offered by the Adult Migrant English Program. There is also little formal research into this area to help inform the role of the interpreter.

deafConnectEd is interested in supporting an action research project to look at these challenges and the strategies that interpreters can use in these settings. We would like to explore this topic through a ‘Community of Practice’ of six interpreters. Interpreters will share their experience, strategies and any resources they may be aware of, that could help other interpreters in this context.

The outcomes of this project may lead to more resources for interpreters, as well as for teachers to help them better understand the role of Auslan interpreters in these specialised situations. The ultimate aim is to better support Deaf students in English classrooms.
