It is possible to talk to your deaf student over the phone using the National Relay Service (NRS). It can be either your deaf student or yourself to make the call. For full information, please visit the NRS website (click here).
To explain briefly, a relayed call is facilitated through a third party known as a Relay Officer. Through using the relay command “Go Ahead” or “GA”, you and your deaf student turn take with the Relay Officer conveying what has been said from one party to the other. During business hours, an additional service – where the Relay Officer is actually an accredited Auslan/English interpreter – is available.
