Another mainstream technology that has contributed greatly to placing deaf people on an equal footing with the wider community is the realm of instant messaging.  This is widely available on free, public platforms such as MSN and FaceTime as well as through private networks such as Microsoft Lync and Novell GroupWise.  It is quite possible that your institute may have instant messaging as a part of either its email or its phone system.  If so, it may be possible to gain special access for your deaf student to allow for communication between the two of you.
