As part of deafConnectEd’s commitment to developing and supporting the Auslan teacher workforce, we are pleased to provide teachers with a workshops series in Auslan Linguistics  delivered by Associate Professor Adam Schembri of La Trobe University.

The workshops are focussed on Auslan and sign language linguistics. They are aimed at both developing Auslan teachers’ linguistic knowledge and also on the classroom implementation of this content. Teachers who are currently teaching Auslan to adults in a range of settings including NMIT’s Auslan program are learning some great new skills.

The workshops commenced in May and will conclude in December 2014. Topics include:

    • general issues in sign language linguistics
    • sign language phonology
    • teaching Auslan vocabulary
    • sign language syntax
    • assessment and benchmarking of Auslan skills.

Additional workshops will be offered in 2015 to further build in teachers understanding of Auslan linguistics. This program is the first in a series of initiatives that are being implemented to further skill up and train Auslan teachers of the future. Feedback from participants to date has been extremely positive.

Please note that enrolments for this are now closed.
